Daddies & Hoppers
When the daddy longlegs and grasshoppers are blown onto the water in late summer and autumn, trout go into a feeding frenzy. These big, buoyant patterns are among the most exciting flies to fish — the takes are savage and unmistakeable.
- Daddy Longlegs (Crane Fly) — the real thing, tied to float and kick in the wave
- Foam & deer hair hoppers — unsinkable patterns for rough water
- Klinkhammer-style daddies — for calmer conditions and selective fish
- Loch Ordie & similar patterns — classic top-dropper flies for drifting
Fish them on the top dropper or point in a wave, or skated across the surface on a calm evening. September on a Scottish loch with a daddy on the top dropper is hard to beat.
